After seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, I have to say one of the best additions to the team and their story overall is Mantis, played by Pom Klementieff. Her childlike innocence and empathic abilities gave me, and I’m sure plenty others, lots of laughs. Mantis’ costume was quite sleek and space-y, however it wasn’t the original design for the film.
There were several designs made, none of which including Mantis’ true-to-comics green skin, which although was made up for in the costume itself, would have been interesting to see. She would have been comparable to Gamora in appearance, but seemingly polar opposites in personality. One of the earlier drafts was released.
Drawn up by Christian Cordella, concept artist for the Captain America sequels and upcoming Avengers films, the earlier design definitely has a more nature-based look, taking a realistic inspiration from an insect with sharper antennae, larger pupils, and crinkly hair and costume. Who knows? Maybe we’ll see more variations in the future of the character!
